Magnetic Braking Wheel

Description

Demonstrates eddy currents used for magnetic braking

Set the bicycle wheel up using the blue bike stand (usually kept with the bike). The attachment on the bottom of the stand must be removed. Use lab jacks to adjust the wheel to the appropriate height. Place the electromagnet such that the aluminum strip sits between the two poles, and adjust the setup until the wheel can move freely.

Attach the electromagnet to a power supply, spin the wheel, and apply some current to see magnetic braking in effect!

Notes

The braking may not be obvious on its own, but is evident when compared to the wheel spinning when the electromagnet is off.
