Conductivity Of Water

Show that pure H2O doesn't conduct electricity Classes Used: Phys 100

Show that water doesn't conduct electricity without ions present.

Demo bulb, two 200mL beakers, salt (on counter above the sink)

Dissolve 2 teaspoons of Nu salt into beaker of water. Warm water works best. Some stirring required. Fill other beaker with plain tap water.

Place bulb in first beaker of plain tap water, turn on with no result; then place bulb into second beaker, salt water, and bulb lights up.

Take care with this demo as wiring is exposed.
