Ruben's Tube

Description

Flaming Sound Wave!! Classes Used: PHYS 101, PHYS 153

Purpose

The Ruben's tube provides an exciting, flaming representation of a sound wave. There are about 80 holes along this tube, which are ignited once the tube is filled with gas. A speaker sits at one end and frequencies that create standing waves are played into the tube. The standing wave puts pressure on the gas, releasing different amounts through each hole causing the flame heights to vary. Now turn the function generator to the correct frequency and turn up the volume. Repeat for other wavelengths.

Apparatus

Flame tube, propane tank (20 lb), function generator, receiver

Set up: Attach the function generator output to the input at the back of the stereo labeled “Phono Right” Ensure the stereo is set to play the Phono input Attach the two cables from the back of the stereo to the receiver/amplifier and then to the speaker on the Ruben's Tube Select a frequency and test the speaker Select one of the frequencies provided on the piece of paper taped on top of the function generator Attach tube to propane cylinder at the other end Attach propane cylinder to tank First turn on the tank, then turn on the propane to the tube After a few seconds light the gas at the holes, some flames my go out during the demo and will need to be re-lit

Setup

Notes

Music can be played into the tube for effect. Classical music or music with a lot of bass works best. As well, any piece of music with a lot of pure tones has good visual effect. Music can be provided.

Due to the flammable nature of this demo, please request assistance. Frequencies of standing waves are recorded on the function generator. Significant volume is required to reach a visible amplitude.

Please provide notice when requesting this demo as some set up is required as well acquiring propane.

Suitable Frequencies: f5: 286 Hz f7: 400 Hz f9: 514.5 Hz Updated on: 06/20/13
