Feather In A Vacuum

Description

Show that acceleration due to gravity is independent of mass. Classes Used: PHYS 107

motion in a vacuum

Purpose

To show that bodies fall with the same acceleration provided there are no frictional forces.

Apparatus

Long tube with feather and solid object, seal, vacuum pump

Setup

A feather and a small solid object are placed in a long tube and the tube is then evacuated usig the vacuum pump. Invert and watch.

Notes

the pressure gauge provides a reading of P_atm - P_tube and that the units of the gauge are inHg. Since 1 atm ~ 29.92 inHg, when the gauge dial reads nearly 30 there is an adequate vacuum inside the tube
