The demonstration room keeps propane in 400g cylinders stocked. We have a torch fitting and a striker. The torch can be used to heat metals to bright red-hot, which is useful in a variety of demos and occasionally in fixing or making things.
When lighting the torch, you need to start with a high enough flow rate to ignite, but not so high that the oxygen around the nozzle is depleted. Hold the flint striker to the end and strike it multiple times. If you don't get a flame at all, check that it's producing sparks, and try increasing the flow rate. If you get a 'puff' of flame that puts itself out, reduce the flow rate. Once it's lit the rate can be adjusted as you please.
