Longitudinal Wave Model
Description
Wave motion
Updated on: 06/19/13
Purpose
To demonstrate the movement of the medium in a longitudinal wave motion.
Apparatus
Frame of suspended magnets, overhead (or horizontal) projector
Setup
The frame holds a series of strips carrying small disc ceramic magnets set so that they all mutually repel. The frame can be placed in front of the horizontal projector or can be placed horizontally on the usual overhead projector. Displace an end magnet with the hand and the motion can be seen transmitted along the magnets. A standing wave can also be set up by moving the end magnet at the right frequency.
