Capillary Tubes
Description
A series of glass tubes with different internal diameters, all connected by a bigger glass tube at the bottom. Comes with a plastic stand.
Purpose
To show capillary action in narrow tubes and to show that the rise is greatest for the smallest diameter tube for water.
Apparatus
- Capillary apparatus
- Dyed water
Setup
Fill apparatus as shown with coloured water, and set up a close-up camera (if necessary) to closely compare the height of each column of water. Pascals principle dictates that the water should be level in each tube, but the capillary effect causes a visible deviation from this.
